Entry #6: Dietary supplements are lifesavers.

As I have gotten older I have begun to realize just how unhealthy most people are. For instance according to this CDC article, only about "1 in 10 adults" are eating enough vegetables or fruits. Although I hate to admit it, I am most certainly among those 9 out of 10 adults who do not eat enough fruits or vegetables. While I was in high school, I remember the only times I would ever eat a vegetable or fruit was when I was forced to by my parents, it was getting so bad that I probably ate around 4 fruits in my sophomore year of high school. Obviously, at the time I did not think much of it, however, reflecting on it now that's a terrible way to live, fruits and vegetables have a lot of the necessary nutrients (vitamins and minerals) that we need to live healthy lives. Although it may be difficult for most people to get their necessary amount of greens and vitamins in, there is a solution that I have been utilizing for the past year. The solution is dietary supplements:

Dietary supplements come in a bunch of shapes and sizes, they can be taken as pills, gummies, or even a smoothie. A lot of dietary supplements can be easily obtained from stores or pharmacies and are an immense help. Not everyone can stomach a bunch of broccoli or carrots or even fruit. I mean when you look at this picture:

most people would not say that looks tasty. However, with supplements, you can take a few pills and give your body enough nutrients so that you can live a healthier lifestyle and make up for what you lack when you decide to not eat that broccoli. For instance, if you are vitamin D deficient, you can take some vitamin D pills, if you lack greens in your diet you can take a greens powder that can be mixed in water and drank. If you are not getting the necessary amount of protein you need in your diet, you can drink a protein shake. Most dietary supplements are also pretty affordable making it a good way to get whatever vitamins or nutrients you are deficient in.

Overall, I think dietary supplements are an incredible way for those of us who simply don't want to eat or can't eat enough vegetables and fruits in our diet. Obviously, dietary supplements should not be a replacement for food, they should be used as a boost and help us not be deficient in certain areas of our diets which will help us become healthier.

  1. Hello Mark, Great blog regarding the importance of dietary supplements. I think as we get older, our lifestyle can at times become very busy and proper nutrition can be more challenging. I know that in my case, depending on exercise levels I may need to consume additional nutrients that are more protein rich with vegetables and fruits that are high in amino acids to mitigate soreness for the following days. Great blog!
